The story of Shuruaat Ek Jyoti Shiksha Ki began in September 2016 with a young graduate named Abhishek Shukla. One day, Abhishek witnessed a child begging at a traffic signal. This heart-wrenching sight ignited a burning question within him: Why are children begging? And more precisely, why do parents allow it? Determined to find answers, Abhishek followed the child to the slum where he lived. The answer was stark—sheer poverty. Driven by instinct and compassion, Abhishek offered to teach the children in the area. The response from the parents was overwhelming, marking the beginning of Shuruaat.
As Abhishek’s initiative gained momentum, more like-minded youths joined him on this journey to educate slum children. They started with their limited savings and spare time, driven by a shared vision of change. A significant breakthrough came when the team succeeded in getting one of the children admitted to a regular school in an age-appropriate class. This achievement attracted the support of like-minded individuals who began donating, paving a promising path for slum children. This marked a new beginning, and thus the name ‘Shuruaat’ was coined.
A pivotal moment occurred when Abhishek noticed a girl student’s irregular attendance. Upon inquiry, he discovered that she, like many others, missed school during her periods due to a lack of appropriate menstrual hygiene products and education. This revelation led to the establishment of Prayagraj first and only Pad Bank by Shuruaat in the year 2021, under Abhishek’s leadership. The Pad Bank now donates about 500 sanitary pads to underprivileged communities and conducts workshops and campaigns on menstrual hygiene.
In 2022, Shuruaat took a significant leap by opening its own play school for children from nursery to first grade, charging just one rupee per day. This nominal fee symbolised a powerful transformation—the hands that once begged now paid for education, instilling a sense of responsibility and ownership in both the children and their families.
Today, Shuruaat Ek Jyoti Shiksha Ki proudly teaches 200+ students, providing quality and free education. This is made possible by the dedication of 50+ volunteer teachers and mentors who ensure the curriculum is up to date and help spread Shuruaat’s message of hope and empowerment. The NGO also boasts a computer lab, and also encourages sports among children to the point that there is a whole day of Saturday for sports. further enhancing the educational experience for these young minds.
Also among our children we got gems like Anchal Sonker, Bhumi Sonker and Nandani who represented our state in Kayaking in K1, K2 and K4 categories and won various medals as part of the Khelo India program and wish to represent our country in their sport in near future.
The efforts of Shuruaat did not go unnoticed. The organisation was recognized on various occasions for its exceptional work in education and menstrual hygiene. Prestigious awards from entities like Dainik Jagran, the Society of Engineers and many other prestigious platforms which acknowledged the impact of their initiatives.
Shuruaat Ek Jyoti Shiksha Ki is a non-profit organisation that relies entirely on the generosity of donors and supporters. We deeply admire and appreciate every individual and organisation that contributes to our cause. Their kindness and generosity make it possible for us to continue transforming lives and building a brighter future for these children.
From a single act of kindness to a transformative movement, Shuruaat Ek Jyoti Shiksha Ki continues to light the way for underprivileged children, breaking the cycle of poverty and igniting the flame of knowledge and opportunity. This is not just the story of an NGO; it is the story of a community coming together to make a lasting impact.
About Our Founder : Abhishek Shukla
Abhishek was just a young boy, pursuing his bachelor’s degree from a middle-class background, with dreams of serving his country by cracking the UPSC exam. He lived a normal life, doing what boys his age typically do. Until one day, he saw an 8-year-old girl begging on the streets near Chungi. She held his hand and kept asking for money. As a responsible member of society, he knew that giving her money wouldn’t help her in the long run. So, he bought her a packet of biscuits. Her eyes screamed her pain, hunger, struggle to eat, her will to grow from the confines that the world had manufactured around her, her plea for light, and her helplessness.
Volunteers are the backbone of all the efforts made at Shuruaat. We invite you to be a part of the reform under progress!
